Women in Philosophy – Dr. Clara Fischer: “Emotion and Affect in Feminist Philosophy”

21. November 2017
Universität Bayreuth

Abstract: Emotion and affect have long played a central role in feminist philosophy, given feminism’s emphasis on relationality, intersubjectivity, and social situatedness. Questions related to feelings have thus featured prominently across different feminist schools (such as psychoanalytic feminism) and philosophical approaches (including care ethics). This talk examines a more recent development in feminist engagement with feelings, the “turn to affect”, and examines whether this latest conceptualisation of affect and emotion holds political purchase for feminists and how this should be understood in the wider context of feminism’s privileging of the affective.
